Baumit Romania, part of the international construction material producer group Schmid Industrie Holding, late last week began operations at its new production facility in Teius, Alba county. The facility, which produces dry mortars, was established with an investment of EUR 10 million. Construction works began nine months ago.

According to company officials, the Teius plant has a production capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year. Production is entirely automated and the site has a staff of eight per shift.

“The production from Teius will mainly supply the construction materials market in Transylvania but will also be used to meet the demand from the domestic market. Some will be exported to countries like Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and the Republic of Moldova. Starting today, we will have some 15 shipments per day,” said Laurentiu Lupusor, general manager of Baumit Romania.

Baumit Romania began operations some ten years ago and has so far invested EUR 15 million. Up until 2004, the company had established two production facilities in Bucharest: a EUR 6 million dry mortar unit and a wet finishing unit. Baumit Romania employs some 120 people.

Company officials have estimated some EUR 20 million in turnover for 2005, with a 17 percent increase over the past year. The company’s plans include the establishment of another dry mortar production unit in Bucharest, followed by the extension in the Timis-Arad counties and Moldova. Reps said earlier in the year that the new investments would be similar to the one in Teius.

The firm’s strategy includes further development of both its dry and wet product facilities. It said that if the facility for wet products in Bucharest could not meet demand, a similar production facility would be opened in Teius.
