11-07-05 21:58

International consumer goods giant Unilever, the manufacturer of the Dove, Knorr and Rexona brands, has appointed a Romanian female chairperson to head its division for the entire Balkan region, Unilever South Central Europe (USCE).

Alexandra Gatej, 40, has been the new chairperson of Unilever South Central Europe since November 1, a position that enables her to co-ordinate all the operations of the group in seven states - Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Moldova.

This represents a total market of 55 million consumers and an annual business of over 140 million euros. Bucharest is the hub of these operations. This is the highest position ever taken by a Romanian manager within a consumer goods company. "The Balkans represent a region with a high growth potential. We will continue to consolidate this business on every field where it is present, a goal that is tightly connected to Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the European Union," Alexandra Gatej said.

"Romania's economic growth, the formation of the middle class and the improvement of the population's access to financial resources is a context that makes us look optimistically towards the future," she added.
