ROMANIA
PRAISED IN ANNUAL U.S. TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS REPORT
The Embassy is pleased
to note that the Government of Romania has made significant
progress in dealing with the important issue of trafficking
in persons as documented in the annual U.S. Trafficking In Persons
Report made public yesterday in Washington.
The Romanian Government has taken several
decisive steps in the past year to counter the scourge of trafficking.
It passed key legislation to toughen penalties against traffickers,
increased police resources to investigate and prosecute those
involved in this trade in human beings, and opened a shelter
to support victims of trafficking once they have been returned
to Romania. Additional shelters are planned.
While there is more to be done to put an
end to this brutal trade in human lives, the U.S. Government and
the Embassy look forward to continuing to work with Romanian authorities
on this problem. Romania is to be congratulated for being one
of three nations in the world who were singled out in the report
for having made significant progress in this area. |
