GRADUATES
COMPLETE "STUDENT COMPANY PROGRAM"
The
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission
to Romania and Junior Achievement are pleased to announce a
Graduation Ceremony of the "Student Company" program.
This program was funded by USAID through World Learning and
implemented by Junior Achievement Romania.
The ceremony will be hosted at the Bucharest
N. Kretzulescu Commercial High School - 17, Hristov Botev St.,
tel.3220210 - on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. The
Minister of Education and Research, Mrs. Ecaterina Andronescu,
and USAID Mission Director, Mr. Denny Robertson, will give opening
remarks. These will be followed by a presentation of the program
achievements and the handing-out of certificates of graduation
to Bucharest participant schools. A press conference will conclude
the event.
The Junior Achievement "Student Company"
is a unique training program that provides high school and university
students with practical entrepreneurial and business experience,
through the organization and operation of an actual company.
It complements the school curriculum by helping young people
develop business skills and accumulate insights into the complexities
and rewards of the market economy.
The program started on April 15, 2002,
with the training of 90 teachers from all over Romania. Fifty-three
of the teachers, from 25 different counties, have already implemented
the "Student Company" program in their schools. Over
1,000 trainees were included in the pilot programs, and they
have started companies involved in a variety of manufacturing
or service related activities. The program has had great success
across Romania, and many other schools have expressed a strong
interest in introducing this training module in their curriculum.
USAID/Romania Mission Director, Denny
Robertson, stated that encouraging the younger generation to
place a high value on free enterprise and to build entrepreneurial
skills is a key to Romania's future economic development.
"The concepts introduced by Junior
Achievement programs inspire students to dream about what might
be accomplished through creative work and dedication. Through
these dreams, new entrepreneurs will be born in Romania, and
tomorrow's corporate leaders will become self-reliant citizens
and role models," said Mr. Robertson.
The U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID) is an independent government agency that provides economic,
development and humanitarian assistance around the world in
support of the foreign policy goals of the United States. Established
in 1961 and beginning operations in Romania in 1990, USAID's
assistance program helps to foster Romania's transition to a
market-oriented democracy and focuses assistance on the areas
of economic growth, democracy-building and social sector restructuring.
To date, USAID Mission to Romania has
committed more than $350 million to assistance programs in these
areas: privatization, financial sector development, private
sector development, energy sector reform, improved environmental
management and protection, democratic governance, civil society
development, decentralized public administration and local government
strengthening, women's reproductive health and reform of the
child welfare system.
