JULY 4
STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR GUEST
Fourth
of July is a special time for most Americans - a day spent with
family and friends, often at baseball games and over cookouts.
This wonderful holiday brings us together to celebrate the freedoms
and values that Americans have come to cherish - democracy,
citizens' rights, freedom of association and of the press, and
respect for the rights of minorities.
This year, this most American of holidays has taken on special
meaning. The tragedy of September 11 has united our nation as
never before. The world stood beside us that terrible day, and
has since. For that solidarity - as touching as it is human
- I offer the humble thanks of my country. And to the Romanian
soldiers who serve with America's best men and women today in
Afghanistan, I offer you our deep appreciation, our prayers,
and our grateful partnership.
My Embassy colleagues and I are proud to represent the United
States here in Romania. We're also proud of the relationship
between our countries, a strong and vital relationship that
is now thriving anew - in educational exchange, in high-level
contacts, and in business, where America is now the third leading
foreign investor in Romania.
I believe that Romanians are looking to the future, not to the
past. A future of economic progress, and of economic inclusiveness.
A future in which the rights of each individual, no matter from
what background or ethnicity, are respected. A future in which
Romanians are united, not divided. A future in which Romania
is enfolded in the security of NATO, and where our countries
stand together proudly in support of common values and common
aspirations.
I salute this vision tonight, and the partnership that we share.
And I thank you for the honor you bestow by celebrating America's
birthday with us.
