U.S. EMBASSY
AND USAID WELCOME
AMERICAN MEDICAL MISSION TO ROMANIA
During
the week of August 31 - September 7, 2002 a team of seven U.S.
experts in cardiac surgery from the state of North Carolina are
working with cardiac specialists in Iasi to improve the health
status of children. The U.S. surgical team is working in partnership
with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Cardiology
Center in Iasi. The team is lead by Professor Francis Robicsek,
Chairman of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department, Carolinas
Medical Center, and at Carolinas Heart Institute. The team also
consists of cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatric
cardiologists, and perfusionists. The team is performing a needs
assessment as a first step in developing a pediatric cardiac surgery
program at Iasi Cardiology Center, in partnership with a similar
medical program in the US. A training program is being conducted
for the surgical team at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery
in Iasi to address certain aspects of the cardiac surgical pathology,
including the very specialized needs of a pediatric cardiac surgery
program.
During the week, they plan to assess several children. The teams
of Romanian and American surgeons will perform pediatric cardiac
surgery on those children affected by congenital cardiovascular
diseases in Moldavian region.
Planning for this linkage began with the visit of U.S. Ambassador
Michael Guest and Minister of Health Daniela Bartos, at the opening
of this center earlier this year. The current mission is made
possible with the support of USAID and World Learning, the Local
Council of Iasi, the Town Hall of Iasi, the Prefecture, the University
of Medicine and Pharmacy "Grigore T. Popa", Iasi, Sof-Medica,
and other sponsors.
The Ministry of Health and Family is happy to have the support
of the U.S. surgical team in the Cardiology Center opened several
months ago under the auspices of Minister Bartos. According to
Professor Radu Deac, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health
and Family "the collaboration with the U.S. surgical team consisting
of international personalities and distinguished guests is an
excellent opportunity for the Iasi Cardiology Center."
