THE
U.S. AMBASSADOR MICHAEL GUEST THANKS ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT FOR
ITS RESPONSE TO THE OCTOBER 7
COALITION MILITARY ACTION
The
United States warmly welcomes and appreciates the strong statement
of support issued by the Government of Romania last night regarding
the military actions that have been undertaken by the international
coalition. Our two countries are joined in recognition of the
dangers that terrorism poses to our citizens and, indeed, to
civilization itself. The Romanian Government's prompt and clear
expression of support bears witness to our close partnership
and to the shared values that united the Romanian and American
peoples.
Last
night's military action was undertaken as a last resort. It
is part of a broader effort to isolate and punish those who
support or condone terrorism. No political cause and no political
grievance can justify the September 11 murder of thousands of
innocent men, women, and children.
As
we have stressed repeatedly, our actions are not directed against
Islam -- one of the world's great religions, and one which,
contrary to the actions of the September 11 terrorists, teaches
peace, tolerance and respect for human life. We are making every
effort to avoid unnecessary loss of life. As President Bush
has announced, we also are providing substantial humanitarian
assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
We
are very grateful for the support of the many governments, including
Romania, in these efforts to bring terrorists to justice and
to combat the networks that sustain terrorist activities worldwide.
